Technical Development to Assess Environmental Pollution and Prevention (KOSEF,
Joint Research Project under Korea-Japan Basic Scientific Cooperation Program
2008-2010) Unless Asian companies demonstrate the safety of their chemical
products following methods required by REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and
Authorization of Chemicals), they are not allowed to export the products to EC.
To overcome this difficulty, we are going to set up a unified framework for
simple and sensitive chemical hazard assessment techniques among Asian
countries, and then require EC to import the industrial products from Asia. To
this end, we must develop a standardized technique to identify toxic chemicals
in very fast and sensitive manner. The aim of this proposed research is to
establish a novel bioassay using gene modified medaka fishes that can be
employed for prompt and reliable screening for hazard of chemicals. Several
standardized laboratory animals need relatively high concentrations of chemicals
or long exposure durations for identifying the toxic effect. To increase the
sensitivity of the biological assays, we wish to use gene disrupted Medaka
fishes. Dr. Takeda (Kyoto Univ.) firstly established a method of disrupting any
given genes in the Medaka fishes. Dr. Koizumi (Kyoto Univ.) wishes to screen
risk of chemicals together with Dr. Choi (Seoul National Univ.), who has
evaluated chemical risk using the Medaka fishes. In this proposed collaboration,
Dr Takeda will generate a few gene disrupted Medaka, and Dr Choi will evaluate
the utility of the novel hazard assessment methods against several
internationally accepted hazard assessment techniques.
